'Lifetime warranty' is one of the most abused phrases in roofing. Here's what each warranty type actually covers and why GAF's Golden Pledge® stands apart.

The Three Layers of Roof Warranty

1. Material Warranty (from the manufacturer)

Covers defects in the shingles or tiles themselves. Standard 'lifetime' shingle warranties are pro-rated — after 10 years they pay roughly 20% of replacement cost.

2. Workmanship Warranty (from the contractor)

Covers installation errors. Industry average is 1–5 years. We offer 10 years on every install.

3. System Warranty (manufacturer + contractor)

Bundles materials, components (underlayment, ridge cap, starter strip, vents), and workmanship under one paper. Only certified contractors can offer these.

GAF Golden Pledge®: 50 yrs material + 25 yrs workmanship, no dollar limit, transferable. Available only from GAF Master Elite® contractors.

What Voids a Warranty

  • Mixing manufacturer brands in the system
  • Improper attic ventilation
  • Unauthorized repairs by another contractor
  • Pressure-washing tile or shingle surfaces

Questions to Ask Before Signing

  • Is the workmanship warranty in writing?
  • Is it transferable if I sell the home?
  • Is there a dollar cap on covered repairs?
  • Who pays for tear-off and disposal on a warranty claim?
